Cobre school board held its meeting at the District Office on August 11, shortly after 7:00 p. m. Board president Toy Sepulveda said the closed session had started at 6:00 and they had discussed limited personnel and student identifiable information, but no decisions had been made. The other members attending were Frank Gomez, Robert Montoya and Frank Cordova. Frances Kelly was absent.

There was no public input at either time, on the agenda or otherwise, and no administrative report.

Superintendent Robert Montoya informed the board of a number of student fundraisers in progress in his Superintendent's Report. The volleyball team worked for their uniform T-shirts; Heidi Dominguez was working on several fundraisers, one for cheer organizing, another for signs and such, a cheerleader one-day camp and similar activities.

Jerry Martinez, football coach, also had some fundraisers, one for equipment, another for a two-day camp. On the day camp, he had parent-volunteers who were helping, and the comment was that they were being very well fed. Cordova said the boys were cleaning up the grounds at Ace Hardware and W and N Enterprises. They were not charging for the work, but asked for whatever donation the firms would offer.

In another instance, former teacher, Roberto Martinez, now retired, was contracted by the school in the areas of volleyball and basketball as a coach. He also was doing some fundraisers.

Also under the report, Mendoza said there would be some public meetings allowing community input, concerning a proposed charter school, Desert Willow. One meeting would be August 20 at 1:00 p.m. The plan could affect Cobre as the school would be recruiting elementary students within the area.

Sepulveda said the next board meeting would be August 25, a Tuesday. After that, the board adjourned. Total time for the entire meeting was about six and a half minutes, probably setting a record for short meetings. After the meeting, when questioned about the start of the school year, Mendoza said elementary students and those in grades 7 and 9 would start this Friday. By Monday, all classes would be in session.
