The Girl Scouts of the Desert Southwest honored 10 women from southern New Mexico and El Paso area as Women of Distinction on Thursday, Sept. 10, in Las Cruces.

Two of the women in this, the third class of honorees, live in Silver City.

Adrienne Dare is a professor emerita of math and computer science from Western New Mexico University and the founder of Expanding Your Horizons for 5th through 8th grade girls. EYH began in Silver City but has expanded to four counties and 21 schools, enabling more than 1,000 girls in southern New Mexico to experience opportunities and possibilities in STEM professions. Additional activities include what she said she is passionate about—Compassionate Choices and Bullying.

Mary Alice Murphy holds a master's degree in French and once taught at the University of Wyoming and Montgomery College in Texas. She is the founder, owner, editor, reporter for the five-year old Grant County Beat. Murphy was active as a Girl Scout in her youth, and again as a volunteer when her daughters were young, including starting Troops on Foreign Soil in Indonesia and Turkey. She serves as a Grant County Community Health Council member and takes part in the Youth Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition.

Caroline Baldwin, also a Silver City resident, was an honoree in last year's class of 10 Women of Distinction. Baldwin, a pilot, is the founder of the successful Literacy Link-Leamos, which helps tutor adults wanting to learn math, English and/or computer skills.
