"In cooperation with the Allingham-Golding American Legion Post 18 and donations from the public, we have prepared five baskets, including turkey and all the trimmings, which we will present later today to five needy families in the community," Silver City Police Department Chief Ed Reynolds said.

"We appreciate the $150 donation from the American Legion," Reynolds continued. "We also spent about $200 on additional supplies for the families."

He said some names came to the department from the schools and recommendations from others who thought families were in needs of help.

"It's somewhat of a tradition," Reynolds said. "I think we've done it nine out of the 10 years I've been here.

"We will partner with the American Legion for more baskets for Christmas," he said. "If anyone wishes to donate items for Christmas baskets, they can drop them off at the station at 1011 N. Hudson Street."
