In a email to the Beat, Peter Haas, USPS Corporate Communications, said: "We are aware of two voter registration forms that were returned to sender in error by Silver City Post Office personnel, as a result of the county clerk's account being depleted."

"These business reply mail pieces should have been delivered to the county, followed by a reminder to the county that its account needed funding," he continued.

"We apologize for any inconvenience," Haas said. "Instructions on proper handling of such mail pieces have been provided to Silver City postal employees to ensure this will not be repeated."
