In the Scrambler competition which launches a vehicle with an egg taped to the front, the goal is not to break the egg. Cameron Trujillo adjusts the vehicle. She and her team partner, Angelina Sanderson, were competing for La Plata Middle School. Two runs and the egg did not break.

On Saturday, Jan. 30, 2016, students from middle schools and high schools throughout the region competed in tests at Harlan Hall and in engineering feats at the Brancheau P.E. Complex at Western New Mexico University. According to Professor Bill Norris, 13 middle school teams and 17 high school teams took part in the competitions.
Norris reported that Animas High School was in attendance for the first time in a long time. Teams also came from Deming, Lordsburg, Silver City, Hatch, Las Cruces, Truth or Consequences and Socorro.
The top seven teams that will advance to the state competition in late February include Cottonwood Middle School, Hatch Middle School, Sierra Middle School, La Plata Middle School, Picacho Middle School, Sarracino Middle School and Red Mountain Middle School.
The top eight teams advancing to the state competition include Socorro High, Las Cruces High, Centennial High, Silver High, Arrowhead High, Hot Springs High, Hatch High, and Lordsburg High schools.
