SILVER CITY, NM - The area closure for the Cameron Creek Prescribed Fire will be lifted Tuesday, April 26. The Cameron Creek Prescribed Fire is six miles north and east of Silver City within the Ft. Bayard Wildlife Refuge.

Personnel have completed approximately 1,100 acres of the 2,100-acre project and plan to finish the burn in a few weeks with the use of a helicopter in the northern section. Crews will not burn during the week of the Tour of the Gila May 4-9, 2016. When the project resumes, the area closure will go back into effect for public safety.

The objectives of this prescribed fire are to improve wildlife habitat, grasslands and watershed, reduce hazardous fuels and return fire to the landscape. The project is funded in part by New Mexico Department of Game and Fish.

If entering the burn area, people are advised to be aware of smoldering vegetation, burned trees, hidden stump holes and hot ash.
