MIMBRES, N.M.; April 26, 2016 - For Immediate Release - After the current weather system exits the area, Wilderness Ranger District fire managers plan to conduct the Gattons Park Prescribed Fire. Ignitions could begin as early as Wednesday, April 27 and extend through the rest of the week.

The 60-acre Gattons Park project is located along Hwy 35 and Forest Service Road 4085X by the Old GOS Ranch. Smoke will be noticeable during ignitions and will linger until the vegetation is completely consumed. Smoke may also impact the Hwy 35 corridor for short periods of time. For firefighter and public safety, do not enter or park near the area and watch for firefighters and equipment in this location.

The objectives of this prescribed fire include reducing hazardous fuel accumulation, removing slash from thinning and firewood gathering, improving wildlife habitat and returning fire to the landscape. The project is funded in part by the New Mexico Department of Game & Fish.

Implementation of the project depends on availability of personnel and equipment and New Mexico Environment Department Air Quality Bureau approval. Fire managers follow a burn plan that outlines the GǣprescriptionGǥ or environmental conditions such as temperature, wind, fuel moisture, ventilation, and humidity that need to be met before the project begins.
