Magdalena, NM; May 26, 2016 - The Magdalena Ranger District's North Fire has grown to 2,530 acres. Approximately 96 personnel are assigned to the incident. This lightning-caused fire is being actively managed for multiple resource benefits. The North Fire is located in the San Mateo Mountains, 25 miles southwest of Magdalena, NM. Weather conditions were favorable yesterday for fire managers to use aerial ignitions (dropping incendiary devices from a helicopter) were used to remove fuel from the fire's path. The introduction of fire into the ecosystem helps reduce hazardous fuels, removes fuel ahead of the fire and prepares the fire perimeter for restoration and modified vegetation of wildlife enhancement. This action occurred along the Crest Road (Forest Road 138).
A public meeting to discuss the North Fire will be held tomorrow evening - Friday, May 27, at 7:00 PM. It will be at the Magdalena High School Fine Art Center in Magdalena. Members of the Incident Management Team and Forest Officials will be present to share information and address questions and concerns. The public is invited to attend.
The fire continues to burn in a mixture of Ponderosa Pine, mixed-conifer, grass, and brush. Active fire behavior continues along the north and east flanks. Active fire behavior is likely to continue, as the extended forecast calls for warm and dry conditions through the Memorial Day weekend. Pre-determined management areas have already been mapped to keep the fire within established boundaries.
Smoke is visible from US Highway 60 and I-25. Communities surrounding Magdalena are experiencing drifting smoke and haze. Smoke-sensitive individuals and people with respiratory problems are encouraged to take precautionary measures.
