LUNA, NM; May 27, 2016 - The lightning-caused Spur Fire on the Quemado Ranger District of the Gila National Forest has grown to approximately 815 acres. New growth is within the perimeter identified under confine/contain strategy. Punky Moore, Public Information Officer explains, GǣThe confine/contain strategy means personnel will take actions to stop or redirect the fire as it approaches certain boundaries but take less restrictive actions as the fire moves south where it can be managed to reduce hazardous fuels and improve forest health.Gǥ Fire crews will continue to prepare forest trails 33 and 34 to the west and hold fire south of Forest Service Road 3020 and west of 49 (Toriette Lake Rd).

Objectives outlined for this incident include: Public and firefighter safety is still the number one priority. Keeping fire within defined management area while protecting private property, range improvements, and heritage resources. Fire behavior was minimal Thursday with flame lengths less than two feet and isolated torching. This is beneficial in reducing fuel for future fires and protecting natural resources.

There are no closure orders or trail restrictions in place. Forest users are being asked as usual to be careful with fire while enjoying the Memorial Day weekend.
