LUNA, NM; May 29, 2016 - For Immediate Release - The lightning-caused Spur Fire on the Quemado Ranger District of the Gila National Forest has not grown and remains at 815 acres. Minimal activity was seen on the west and south sides of the fire. However, hot and dry conditions predicted through the holiday weekend could set up fuels to have greater potential for fire growth.

In order to secure the west side of the fire, crews are planning to ignite from Dillon Mountain to Road 3020 when conditions are appropriate. When these operations occur, smoke production will increase. These actions are intended to protect grazing lands and private property west of the fire. Also, crews continue to work on the east side of the fire along Forest Service Road 49 (Toriette Lake Rd.) down to Highway 12.

During the management of this incident, the Gila/Las Cruces Type 3 Management Team and Quemado Ranger District have been working in partnership with private landowners, grazing permittees and other agencies to meet multiple resource objectives for all parties involved. These objectives include: keep firefighter and public safety the first priority, maintain fire within the defined management area and protect private property, range improvements, and heritage resources.

There are no closure orders or trail restrictions in place. Forest users are being asked as usual to be careful with fire while enjoying the Memorial Day weekend.
