Michael Quarrel, 81, of Deming, was sentenced in Las Cruces federal court on June 2, 2016, to two years of probation for violating the Archaeological Resource Protection Act. He was also ordered to pay $1,542.48 in restitution and was banned from BLM land during his probation.

According to a press release, Quarrel admitted that on Sept. 30, 2013, he dug on BLM land near Cedar Mountain in Luna County and removed several pieces of broken Mimbres pottery.
