SILVER CITY, NM; July 11, 2016 - For Immediate Release - The lightning-caused Black Fire was detected on the Silver City Ranger District of the Gila National Forest early this morning. The fire is located in a drainage south of Black Peak, and is partially within the burn-scar of the Signal Peak Fire. The fire is burning through pine, oak, and grass and is displaying 4Gǥ to 6Gǥ flames on all sides.

The Black Fire is in close proximity to the Continental Divide Trail (CDT), and for this reason visitors and hikers are being asked to avoid the area. An official Closure Order is in effect for Signal Peak, Lockney Road, and the CDT, and will remain in effect until further notice.

The fire is currently estimated at fifty acres; Silver City Hotshots have been dispatched to the scene along with an engine and suppression unit from the Wilderness Ranger District.

Personnel committed to the incident are monitoring and patrolling the fire. Aviation resources (three single-engine air tankers and a type-3 helicopter) have been requested. A Type-3 organization has been ordered. The fire is expected to continue moving east-northeast and smoke will be visible from Silver City and the surrounding areas.
