A 36-year-old man who reportedly had an outstanding warrant for aggravated murder in Ohio has been arrested and charged in the shooting death of Hatch Police Officer Jose Chavez.

Jesse Hanes, whose last known address was in the 3300 block of Parklane Avenue in Columbus, OH, currently faces one count of willful and deliberate first-degree murder. Additional charges are pending.

An investigation was launched Friday after Officer Chavez was shot during a traffic stop near the Pic Quik convenience store on Franklin Avenue in the Village of Hatch.

 

According to court documents, Hanes was the driver of a silver 1991 four-door Lexus that was stopped by Officer Chavez at 3:41 p.m. At the time of the stop, Hanes had one front-seat passenger, described as a white male, and another passenger in the rear of the vehicle, described as a black male.
