On a gray Tuesday morning, Sept. 20, 2016, a World War II veteran, Curtis Lile Maxwell, Jr. was laid to rest at Fort Bayard National Cemetery

Born July 11, 1924, he joined the Marine Corps in 1943, where he served in the Fifth Marine Division as an expert in the Signal Corps with Code Talkers on the island of Iwo Jima in World War II.

He leaves his wife of 69 years, Anne Pennington Maxwell, three sons, a daughter, 12 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren and others for whom he became a father figure.

In addition to members of the local Marine Corps League Detachment 1328, who served as honor guard with a rifle volley salute, and the playing of Taps by Don Spann, Marine Honor Guard members, Staff Sgt. Jones, Staff Sgt. Maciel, Staff Sgt. Zurick and Lance Cpl. Neira attended the ceremony from Delta Battery, 2nd Battalion, 14th Marines in El Paso, Texas.
