Mayor Ken Ladner presents Pro Bono Week proclamation to Cathryn Wallace

A proposed ordinance sponsored by District 3 Councilor Jose Ray Jr., which would have allowed utility task vehicles (UTVs), also called side-by-sides, to operate on city streets, was defeated 3-1 at the Silver City's Tuesday, Oct. 25, council meeting. The proposal was opposed by councilors Cynthia Bettison, Lynda Aiman-Smith, and Guadalupe Cano, representing Districts 1, 2, and 4, respectively. The three cited safety, noise, and enforcement issues.

Several residents spoke before the council prior to the vote, supporting and opposing the UTV measure.

Mayor Ken Ladner stated that on Nov. 11, Veterans Day, the new Highway 90 bridge will be officially designated the GǣVeterans Memorial Bridge.Gǥ The hour of the dedication will be announced shortly, he said.

 

The council approved a long-term lease for the management of the Silver City Municipal Golf Course, also known as Scott Memorial Park Golf Course. The lease is with Western New Mexico University, and its president Joe Shepard said they are attempting to manage the course to PGA standards. GǣWe're having conversations of indeed hiring a superintendent of greens. In the six months we've maintained the golf course we've already aerated it twice. That typically has not happened in the past four-five years. We are now on a regular schedule for fertilizer - an approved PGA type of program. And, yes, we do cut the grass on a regular basis and we're very sensitive about that.
