Wednesday, Feb. 22, at approximately 6:22 p.m., Grant County Sheriff's deputies were dispatched to Gila Regional Medical Center in reference to an aggravated battery that occurred between Danny R. Chavez and his 69-year-old grandfather at 8A Agua Blanca in North Hurley.

When deputies arrived at GRMC's Emergency Room, according to the offense report, the grandfather was being treated for a 12-centimeter laceration which started near his right temple and went back to the rear of his head.

Deputies were told by witnesses that when the grandmother told Chavez to do something he became angry and yelled at her, at which point the grandfather told Chavez not to be disrespecting his grandma, according to the report, and to have some respect. At that point, witnesses said, Chavez became angry, got off the couch, went to the kitchen, grabbed a kitchen knife off the counter and threw it at the grandfather striking him on the right side of his head, the report stated.

The grandmother applied a towel to the heavily bleeding wound, the report said. At this time Chavez, according to witnesses, grabbed his 7-year-old son and ran out of the house. The grandmother, together with two great-grandchildren, transported the grandfather, meeting up with an ambulance at WendyG
