The Freeze 2 Fire, located 50 miles east-northeast of the town of San Carlos, is currently burning on the San Carlos Apache Reservation near Freezeout Mountain. The strategy for the incident is full suppression.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs and the San Carlos Apache Tribe brought in David Bales’ Type 2 Incident Management Team (IMT) to assume command of the Freeze 2 Fire on Wednesday, June 7, at 6:00pm. A joint Delegation of Authority was signed by San Carlos Agency, Fort Apache Agency, and Incident Commander David Bales on June 9, 2017. The IMT transitioned management of the Freeze 2 Fire back to a local Type 3 organization on Thursday, June 15, at 6:00am. Their objective is to keep the fire within its existing footprint and to minimize risk and exposure to firefighters. They are looking for hotspots along the fire's edge while other firefighters are repairing containment lines put in place during suppression activities.
There is an area closure in place around Freezeout Mountain. The closure includes the Ten of Diamonds area, accessed from both the Fort Apache Reservation and San Carlos Apache Reservation. Road closures include road 2032 north of Heartbreak Hotel and road 2034. The one-way 10 of Diamonds Road and camping area remains closed to allow firefighters safe passage to work.
