Silver City, NM, June 24, 2017—The National Weather Service (NWS), Santa Teresa Office, is predicting widespread shower and thunderstorm activity this weekend and early next week. These storms may produce very heavy rains, hail and strong winds. The areas that do receive the wetting rains should see a significant reduction in fire danger in the short-term. The NWS also predict that warmer and drier weather will return next Wednesday through Friday.

Typically we see our season ending event around the 4th of July with the onset of the monsoon season. The NWS still hasn’t indicated whether or not the monsoons are setting up, we are still waiting. Regardless though, fire activity on the Gila National Forest has been low to moderate this season. We have lightning-caused fires that are being managed for a variety of resource benefits – to include fuel reduction, watershed restoration, wildlife habitat restoration and forest health. Thus far we have treated over 60,000 acres of the Gila NF with wildfire and so far we are seeing very positive results.

Along with wildfire comes smoke. The NM Air Quality Bureau reminds us that smoke can hurt your eyes, irritate your respiratory system, and intensify chronic heart and lung problems. Your eyes are your best tools to determine if it’s safe to be outside. If visibility is over 5 miles, the air quality is generally good. If you are having health effects from smoke exposure then take extra care to stay inside or get to an area with better air quality. You should also see your doctor or healthcare professional as needed. Currently the Gila National Forest is posting air quality reports on Inciweb.
