Fires in Arizona have blazed up over the past few days with westerly winds bringing smoke into southwest New Mexico. If you are going hiking this weekend, be sure to check before entering national forests to find out what conditions are with fires.

And fires continue to burn in New Mexico:
The Tiffany Fire is burning just south of Socorro, nm and has burned almost 6,000 acres. It is 32 percent contained.

The Baca Fire continues in the Gila Nation Forest and has burned just over 11,000 acres. It is 32 percent contained and is exhibiting minimal fire behavior

The Round Fire in the GNF has burned 7,397 acres, is 42 percent contained and is exhibiting moderate behavior.

The Corral Fire has burned 19,900 acres in the Gila Wilderness and is showing minimal creeping and smoldering

The Straw Fire in the Gila Wilderness has burned 9,360 acres and is showing minimal behavior, as it received substantial precipitation.

The Teacher, Gravel and Seven fires in the GNF are not being updated regularly, nor has the Monument fire in the Lincoln National Forest, nor the Bonita Fire in the Cason NF.

Arizona fires:
The Goodwin Fire has closed most campgrounds in the Prescott National Forest.

Start date: June 24, 2017, 4:00 pm; Size: Approximately 25,328 acres; Percent Contained: 43%

Cause: Under Investigation; Resources Assigned: Approximately 1,100 personnel;

Vegetation: Predominantly dense chaparral and Ponderosa pine stands in drainages.

Burro Fire

The fire reported the morning of June 30 is in the Santa Catalina foothills near Burro tank. The fire is burning in tall grass and brush with a moderate to high rate of spread. Aviation resources assigned include a Very Large Air Tanker (VLAT), and 4 helicopters. Ground resources include multiple crews and miscellaneous overhead.

It has burned approximately 50 acres and is planned for full suppression.

The Frye Fire on Mount Graham began June 7
At 43 percent contained, it has burned 39,993 acres and is estimated to be contained by July 30.

The Swisshelms fire was reported June 27 and has burned about 5,000 acres east of Elfrida, Arizona, on private and BLM land. It is 15 percent contained.

The Boundary Fire in the Kendrick Mountain Wilderness has been burning for nearly a month on Coconino and Kaibab national forests. It has burned 17,788 acres, but is 98 percent contained. Highway 180 has been re-opened.

The Gentry Fire on the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest began on June 29 and has burned about 175 acres. It is expected to clean up much of dead and downed material from the Rodeo/Chediski Fire of 2002.

The Mink and Saddle fires in the Coronado National Forest are each 90 percent contained.
