Hundreds of museums celebrate the American West (including more than a few east of the Mississippi). But True West magazine says the Silver City Museum in New Mexico is one of the best.

In fact, the institution—which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year--is #8 in True West’s Top 10 Western Museums of 2017.

The entire list of best museums is in True West’s September 2017 issue, on newsstands now.

“Southwest New Mexico is a place of great history and heritage,” says True West Executive Editor Bob Boze Bell. “The Silver City Museum does a great job of telling the diverse and interesting stories of the region. It’s truly a great Western museum.”

Two-time Spur Award-winning writer Candy Moulton and the editors of True West selected the winners for this annual award based on extensive travels, research and firsthand experiences in visiting dozens of Western museums each year.

Moulton cited the museum for its major exhibits, which showcase more than 20,000 items and 17,000 photographs. This past year, one of those exhibits was “Stories of Southwest New Mexico Women,” which featured multicultural stories of the Mimbres, Apache, African American, Mexican and Spanish women who shaped the town in the early 20th century.

True West magazine is in its 65th year of leading the way in presenting the true stories of Old West adventure, history, culture and preservation. For more information, visit TWMag.com or call 888-687-1881.
