Silver City MainStreet Downtown Vacancy Report

Silver City MainStreet has conducted a historic district vacancy survey. The survey was conducted by the Economic Vitality committee with volunteers from the community. The historic district is bounded by San Vicente Street to the south, Cooper Street to the west, College Street to the north and Bullard Street is the east boundary. The results are a ten percent vacancy rate in the district.

The survey was conducted on the commercial buildings in the district. "We have heard people state that half of downtown is empty, but that is not accurate," states Silver City MainStreet board president Patrick Hoskins. Some of the buildings that are empty also happen to be the larger buildings and most of those are located on Bullard St. giving a distorted view of the actual vacancy rate."

"Some of the larger buildings are owned by people who live out of state and don't want to sell because they can write off the depreciation, or they may be asking too much for rent to have them occupied. We are actually very happy with the rate of ten percent. Currently Carlsbad NM also has a ten percent vacancy rate and they are in the middle of an oil boom."

We have more than two hundred businesses in this district and we are glad to have a diverse a business base. The vacancy report will be conducted annually.
