Bayard, NM - On March 5, 2018 the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau investigated threats made by a student towards a teacher at Snell Middle School in Bayard.

The initial investigation determined that a fourteen-year-old male student at the school posted a video message on his social media threatening a teacher. The threat indicated the student would commit acts of violence against the teacher if his grade was not raised.

In an interview with NMSP investigators the student admitted to posting the threats. After conferring with the Grant County District Attorney's office and Juvenile Probation Office, the student was arrested and booked into the Luna County Juvenile Detention Center on the following charges:
Extortion (felony, third degree)
Assault upon a school employee (misdemeanor)
Interference with the educational process (misdemeanor)

This incident remains under investigation with no further information available at this time. The identity of the juvenile suspect and the victim will not be released by State Police.
