On a sunny, breezy Saturday, the people of Silver City and surrounding areas gathered at Gough Park to celebrate Earth Day. The festivities started off with the Circle of the Sun Community Singers, led by Maria Casler, serenading the crowd. Over 30 local businesses and organizations had booths to inform people about their services, green products and activities.

There were food, plants, and activities during the day, with the emphasis on eco-friendliness, and a site set aside for people to deliver papers for shredding and to dispose of e-waste.

Voter registrars walked around the park, and there was a booth set up to register people to vote, with a special section for “Future Voters” to vote for their favorite animal among three that live in the Gila. Sharon Bookwalter, in charge of this activity, said that fifty-nine children voted. On the ballot were Raven, Cougar, and Black Bear. Cougar won with 63% of the votes (37 total). Black Bear took 25% of the votes (15 total), and Raven trailed with 12% of the votes (7 total).

There was also a site set aside for people to deliver papers for shredding and to dispose of e-waste.
