On Monday, June 10, Grant County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to Oakwood Avenue in Silver City at approximately 7:55 p.m. in reference to a stabbing call. When they arrived they encountered a 32-year-old male who had lacerations to his left hand and whose shirt “appeared to be covered in blood.” Later in the investigation, according to a GCSO offense report narrative, deputies also reported two additional lacerations and one puncture-style wound to the left side of the victim’s rib cage.

The narrative stated that the two, father and son, began arguing over bringing people to the house, which developed into a physical fight, which grew into the father, Ronald Chanez Sr., 51, of Silver City, chasing his son and going to his truck to retrieve his knife, with which the victim stated he attacked him using both slashing and stabbing motions. Deputies retrieved a ten-inch fixed blade knife from the back seat of Chanez Sr.’s green 2002 Nissan pickup.

The victim was transported to Gila Regional Medical Center for his injuries, according to the narrative, while Chanez Sr. was arrested on one count of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and transported to the Grant County Detention Center for booking. According to GCDC staff, Chanez Sr. was released on Friday, June 14.
