Prairie Fire
The lightning-caused Prairie Fire was reported on Thursday, August 1, and is approximately 1 acre, burning on National Forest System lands in Carton County, NM. This fire lies just east of the scenic overlook on US Hwy 180, seven miles south of Luna, NM. This fire is visible from US Hwy 180. With predicted weather, fire growth is expected to be minimal. The decision has been made to manage this fire and allow fire to play its natural role on the landscape. It is burning in ponderosa pine, pinyon juniper and oak.

Ghost Fire

The lightning-caused Ghost Fire, reported on Saturday, August 3 is approximately 40 acres, burning on National Forest System lands in Catron County, NM. It is burning in ponderosa pine pinyon juniper, oak, and grass approximately 3 miles east of Collins Park. The crew and two engines plan to keep the fire south of the Bursum Road in Y Canyon, east of FR 4047U, and north of FR 4047Z. The fire is visible from Elk Springs Subdivision and NM Highway 12 as crews burn out in advance of the fire. The Fire is exhibiting moderate to low fire effects. This particular area is drier than most of the surrounding area, but is anticipated to receive rain with the current forecast.

Smoke from fire rises during the daytime, but in the evening can pool down in canyons, drainages, and basins.
