Silver City, NM – August 13, 2019 – With three exciting events sure to attract both visitors and residents alike, Downtown Silver City, New Mexico, is theplace to be this Labor Day Weekend. Saturday, August 31 features the Taste of Downtown and Love Local Celebration presented by Silver City MainStreet. Additionally, throughout the weekend, Silver City will host the three-day Rolling Stones Gem and Mineral Show at the Grant County Conference Center.

“Silver City is known for our variety and our unique local flair,” said Patrick Hoskins, MainStreet board president. “The three events that fill the Labor Day Weekend capture that essence, and we know that everyone who visits will get a genuine taste of Silver City. Enjoy the Gem and Mineral Show, have a fun lunchtime with great tastes from downtown eateries, then find some great deals while shopping, too.”

Taste of Downtown takes place from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and features delicious treats from fifteen restaurants and eateries. Samples include mini sandwiches of slow cooked pork with coleslaw and chipotle cream at the Corner Kitchen, a natural and vegan taste at Potala Palace, Italian meatballs in sweet basil red sauce with locally grown basil at Vicki’s Eatery, Black Bean Quinoa Soup at Tapas Tree Grill, and brownies at Honeebee Goods, to name a few of the sweet and savory tastes that will be served. Other participants include Little Toad Creek, Tranquil Buzz Coffee House, Diane’s Restaurant, Silver City Food Co-op, Diane’s Bakery and Deli, The Fry House, The Mint Chip, Mick’s 33 Lounge, and Q’s Southern Bistro. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at the Visitor Center on Hudson Street or online at www.silvercitymainstreet.com. 

In addition to a thriving restaurant scene, Silver City boasts of 145 independently-owned businesses in downtown, including retail, coffee shops, lodging and services. Supporting local business contributes approximately 68 percent of sales to the local economy versus 43 percent from larger businesses.

To put the spotlight on the variety of one-of-a-kind local stores in Silver City, as well as encourage local shopping, The Love Local Celebration will feature deals, drawings and discounts from 41 downtown merchants throughout the day on August 31. Look for local posters in the windows of participating merchants. 

To make the day of eating and shopping even more enticing, ticket holders for Taste of Downtown and participants of the Love Local Celebration will be eligible to participate in a free drawing for gift baskets and gift certificates at the event headquarters at The Hub located at 601 N. Bullard Street. 

“In addition to celebrating our local shops and eateries, the event is a true celebration of community,” added Hoskins. “Funds raised by this event go to support MainStreet activities that include beautification projects and programs and projects that encourage residents and tourists to visit downtown Silver City—including the local and visitor favorite event—the Lighted Christmas Parade. This is a community effort and a community celebration and it’s in line with our mission at Silver City Mainstreet—to encourage a vibrant, historic downtown Silver City which is recognized as the heart of our diverse community.”

For those coming in from out of town, Labor Day Weekend’s events continue with the Rolling Stones Gem and Mineral Show. Presented by the Grant County Rolling Stones Gem & Mineral Society, this family-fun event features vendors, educational speakers and displays, and free daily field trips for collecting. The show opens Saturday, August 31 and is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, September 1 is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Monday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
