On Thursday, Oct 3, 2019, at approximately 5:28 p.m., a bicycle driven by Jennifer Simmons, 38, of Silver City, traveling west on E. Broadway, failed to stop at the red traffic light at Hudson Street and crashed into the passenger side front door of a blue 2018 Dodge SUV driven by Bethany Williams of Tyrone. Williams was traveling north on Hudson Street and had just begun moving north after the northbound traffic light had turned green, according to a Silver City Police Department crash report. Both car and bicycle sustained heavy damage.

Simmons was found by officers lying on the ground next to her bicycle on the passenger side of the Dodge complaining of pain, the report stated, and she was transported from the scene by EMS. Simmons told officers her brakes did not work when she attempted to stop. No injuries to Williams were noted in the report.

Two witnesses confirmed Williams’ account that the bicycle failed to stop at the red light and collided with her vehicle. Surveillance video from the Hudson Snappy Mart also confirmed Williams’ vehicle had the right-of-way and that Simmons failed to stop at the red light.

The report said that Simmons will be cited through the mail for improper equipment and failure to yield.
