The Silver City Rotary Club held a Octoberfest party Wednesday evening on the patio of Abobe Springs, to raise funds for the continued fight against polio. Event-goers were able to enjoy German appetizers, a glass of wine or a beer, and had the opportunity to bid on items in a silent auction, which included White House Christmas ornaments, jewelry, a Silver City Museum Gift Basket and more.
Peter Falley, Chairman of the Rotary Club Foundation, told the audience of about 30, that although Polio has been effectively eradicated in the U.S. there are still hot spots in the world, particularly Pakistan and Afghanistan. And with the ease of world travel, there is still potential for the disease to reappear in the developed world.
Falley said that the Bill Gates Foundation would match any funds raise 2-1. He later told the Beat that the total net receipts from the event, auction and donations were more than $1,900. “The full impact, when the Gates Foundation contribution is included, will be on the order of $6,000,” Falley said.
