Historic Fort Bayard started its annual Fort Bayard Days on Friday, Sept. 20, with a flag-raising ceremony presented by members of the Silver City Allingham-Golding Post No 18 of the American Legion and viewed by elementary school students from surrounding areas. The flag, which flew over the White House on Fort Bayard's birthday in August, was given to the Fort Bayard Historic Preservation Society by U.S. Sen. Jeff Bingaman. Students participated in the Pledge of Allegiance and a variety of patriotic songs. "President Theodore Roosevelt," played by Randy Milligan, even gave a speech commemorating New Mexico's 100th Birthday. Once the ceremony was done, students had the opportunity to explore the 20 living history booths and stations to learn more about this historic landmark.
