The Silver City Police Department is investigating a number of burglaries reported since Friday, October 19, 2012. The following is a breakdown of the reported crimes:

On October 19, 2012 at about 9 am, a burglary was reported at Smoke This, which is located at 1872 Highway 180 East. Entry into the business was gained by breaking the front glass door.

According to the owner the burglary happened sometime between 6 pm on October 18 and 8:50 am on October 19, 2012. Items taken from the business include a silver Toshiba Security System, a carton of Marlboro Red cigarettes, a black Toshiba Laptop Computer, a Silver Kodak Digital Camera, wood pipes, torch lighters and rolling papers, Silver Premium Electric Cigarette Starter Kit, and $60 in rolled quarters. The approximate total value is $8900.



On October 20, 2012 at about 9:41 am, a burglary of a motor vehicle was reported in the 600 block of W. Yankee Street. The vehicle was a purple 2008 Chevrolet SUV.

According to the investigation the burglary happened sometime between 8:50 am and 9:10 am on October 20, 2012. Items taken from the vehicle were a handmade knit Turquoise purse, an LG Cell Phone, debit and credit cards, and $200 in currency. The approximate total value is $300. The vehicle had been left unlocked.  

On October 20, 2012 at about 10:16 am, a burglary of a motor vehicle was reported under the 90 South Bridge near the entrance to the San Vicente Creek walking trails. The vehicle was a silver 2010 Toyota 4-door.

According to the investigation the burglary happened sometime between 9:10 am and 10:10 am on October 20, 2012. Items taken from the vehicle were a black nylon shoulder bag, a purple canvas tote bag, a beige with green lettering tote bag, an orange with beige trim tool bag, silk scarves, dog collar, 50 watt power inverter, produce and a checkbook. The approximate total value is $150. Entry was gained by breaking the left rear door window with a rock.

On October 20, 2012 at about 10:06 am, a burglary was reported in the 3400 block of Pinos Altos Road.  A shed on the property had been broken into.

According to the owner the burglary happened sometime between 4 am and 6 am on October 20, 2012. Items taken from the shed was a Sears Compressor on wheels, a metal trowel with black handle, a Wal-Mart tape measure, and a grey Black & Decker Scroll Saw. The approximate total value is $103.

On October 20, 2012 at about 11:34 am, a burglary was reported in the Silver City Fire Department, which is located at 1825 E. 32nd Street.  A shed on the property had been broken into.

According to personnel who discovered the burglary, it happened sometime between Friday, October 19, unknown time, and 7:45 am on October 20, 2012. According to the reporting person, nothing appeared to be missing; however a number of items had been moved and thrown on the floor. He said a box of chemical test kits had been opened and left by the door.

As a result of the investigation into the two shed burglaries, Joseph Hyde, 35 years of age, last known address is Chamias Rd in Mimbres, New Mexico, was arrested and charged with two counts of Burglary, both 4th degree felonies and one count of Larceny, a misdemeanor.

Hyde was transported to the Grant County Detention Center where he was booked in. His bond was set at $11,000.


The investigation is continuing into these crimes.
