... Winter weather advisory in effect from 10 pm this evening to 4 pm MST Monday...

The national weather service in El Paso TX/Santa Teresa has issued a winter weather advisory for moderate to heavy snowfall... Which is in effect from 10 pm this evening to 4 pm MST Monday.

* event: moderate to heavy snowfall with accumulations of 3 to 6 inches above 5500 ft. 1 to 3 inches of snow accumulation expected at elevations below 5500 ft.

* timing: snowfall is expected to begin mid evening tonight and continue overnight and Monday morning before tapering off mid afternoon Monday.

* winds: southwest 5 to 10 mph overnight... Shifting to west 10 to 20 mph Monday mid day.

* snow levels: initial snow levels will be around 5500 ft at midnight falling to 4500 ft or lower by morning.

* impacts: hazardous travel conditions are expected to develop across the area with reduced visibility in falling snow as well as snow packed and icy road surfaces. Highway 180 from north of Deming to the Arizona state line may become impacted.

A winter weather advisory means that periods of snow will cause travel difficulties. Be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibilities... And use caution while driving.

... Winter storm to bring snow to area mountains and western lowlands tonight and New Years Eve...

A large upper-level western U.S. storm system will drop out of the Great Basin this evening and swing across the southwestern U.S. tonight and New Year's Eve day. This system will bring strong winds... Increased moisture... And cooler air with it. Accumulating snowfall is expected to start over the Gila region of New Mexico above 5500 ft around mid evening tonight. Snow levels will drop to around 4500 ft after midnight and lowlands over the southwest New Mexico will see a mix of rain and snow. Accumulating snowfall will be possible over the lowlands north and west of Deming. Accumulating snowfall is expected to start late tonight over the Sacramento Mountains. The entire region will experience strong winds Monday as the system moves across. Below normal temperatures will make for a cold and blustery day with wind chills in the 30s and 40s across the lowlands.
