SC town councilor Cano addresses inaccuracies

The Silver City Town Council held a regular meeting October 10, 2023. Attendance to the meeting included Mayor Ken Ladner, council members included Jose Ray, Nicholas Prince, Guadalupe Cano, and Rudy Bencomo.

Council comments

Prince encouraged everyone to take advantage of the High Desert Humane Society low cost vaccinations that would be held October 12, 2023. He looked forward to seeing his fellow councilors at the upcoming conference (Outdoor Economics Conference & Expo)
and said he has been proud to serve with them.

Bencomo asked everyone to vote. Early voting will continue until November 4, 2023, and the Election Day is November 7, 2023

Richard Maynes resigns from Hurley council

The town of Hurley held a regular meeting October 10, 2023. Attendance to the meeting included Mayor Ed Stevens, councilors Nanette Day, Reynaldo Maynes and Keana Huerta.

Public input

Several residents had come to address the council with concerns. A property on Arizona street has caused concern for their safety. The police have been called many times, but they feel nothing has been done.

Another resident came because she had been having problems with a neighbor's dogs.

Grant County Commission holds work session 101023 part 1

[Editor's Note: The Grant County Commission meeting on Oct. 10, 2023, lasted just shy of 3 hours, so readers can expect several articles. The first one begins with public input and then goes into county reports.]

After the Grant County Commission at the work session on Oct. 10, 2023, amended the agenda to add the Grant County Community Health Council as a presentation, the commissioners heard public input from Melanie Zipin, co-owner of Zócalo with her family in Arenas Valley. "We've been working on the property for several years. When Covid hit, it delayed our opening until after the lockdown. We've lived in the community for more than 30 years. We saw a need for a place for locals and visitors to gather and listen to music, have events and bring their families. We've seen a very positive impact in the community, especially from the Mining District and the rural areas. We are looking at putting in a fire sprinkler or suppression system, which would protect our patrons, our historic building and the surrounding area."

Silver City-Grant County Chamber held monthly luncheon 100523

Silver Consolidated Schools Superintendent William Hawkins, was the featured speaker as introduced by Lt. Gov. Howie Morales speaking from Santa Fe, who said he was waiting to hear what Mr. Hawkins would say. "His accomplishment at Silver Schools is awesome. Wherever I go, he's there not just as a superintendent, but as a parent, an educator, and as a citizen. I'm saying this as a parent, as an educator. He's out cutting weeds at Fox Field. He shows his respect and his commitment to the schools."

Hawkins said he was humbled by that introduction. He introduced as a guest at the luncheon the Assistant Superintendent Luis Alvarez.

Silver City Ranger District lifts area closures for prescribed fires

Jaybird and Mill prescribed fire closure areas reopened Wednesday

SILVER CITY, NM, October 25, 2023 – The Gila National Forest, Silver City Ranger District lifted two area closures that had been put in effect during the Jaybird and Mill prescribed fires.

"These two prescribed fire projects helped remove dead and down woody material and understory brush that help feed crown fires," said Silver City District Ranger Elizabeth Toney. "While the area closures for these two prescribed fire units have been lifted, please be careful when entering any recently burned area."

Bayard recognizes Freeport McMoRan Inc.

The town of Bayard held a work session and regular meeting October 10, 2023. Attendance included Mayor Chon Fierro, councilors Eloy Medina, Frances Gonzales, Eloy Gonzales, and Jose Diaz. The work session allows the council time to ask questions about items on the agenda and discuss them. Gabriel Ramos, city clerk, also attended.

The council had questions about the accounts payable and what some of the charges had been for. Ramos explained all of them. The consent agenda had an approval for David Palomarez to attend continuing education conference. Ramos said he needed it to finish the required credits for his water certification. He only had 24 more hours. It will be a weeklong course in Las Cruces and will cost approximately $2,000 that includes the class and cost of the trip.

Cobre, Silver, FMI and WNMU working together on tech school

The Cobre Consolidated School Board held a meeting on October 9, 2023. Board members in attendance included Serena Murillo, Gabriella Begay, Gilbert Guadiana, and David Terrazas. Elizabeth Dean did not attend. Acting superintendent Michael Koury also attended.

Kiwanis presented student of the month certificates for both September and October. The students get nominated by their teachers.

Avery Castro from Snell Middle School goes above and beyond to help keep the school clean. He never complains and always perseveres.

Samaiyah Vega from Snell Middle School works hard and tries to help other students without hesitation. She also has not had any absences this semester.
