Bayard gets legislative update

The town of Bayard held a work session and regular meeting September 25, 2023. Attendance included councilors Eloy Medina, Frances Gonzales, Eloy Gonzales, and Jose Diaz. Mayor Chon Fierro didn't attend. The work session allows the council time to ask questions about items on the agenda and discuss them.
Police Chief Hector Carrillo said in the past 180 to 190 calls had to be handled by the sheriff's department. The past month only 14 had to be taken care of by the sheriff's department. The Bayard police department has been able to cover the majority.

Southwest Women's Fiber Arts Collective (SWFAC) held their annual sale in the Murray Hotel on Saturday and Sunday, in conjunction with the Silver City Art Association's Weekend at the Galleries.
First in the door, Bev's Kitchen, by Beverly Bean, had a table with many mouthwatering desserts, cakes, cookies, napoleons, eclairs, cupcakes and more. She even offered some gluten-free options. She will soon open a bakery on Texas Street.
The ballroom at the Murray had many different fiber arts offered by local people. So many different pieces to choose from. They had clothing, scarfs, jewelry, stuffed animals, pictures, and much more.

The Southwest Print Fiesta took place in the Silver City MainStreet Plaza on Saturday, Oct. 7, 2023 on a beautiful early fall day. The star of the fiesta is always the Steamroller Press of various prints from linoleum block stencils on large pieces of print paper.

The 16th annual Mimbres Harvest Festival, hosted by the Mimbres Valley Health Action League, took place on a slightly breezy, but sunny Saturday, Oct. 7, 2023 at the San Lorenzo School. Tents of informational booths and vendors covered the ground behind the school. Entertainers plays instruments and sang under a big tent. Another tent covered an outdoor eating space for the samples of contest pies and from food vendors outside and inside the gym, a health fair, hosted by the Mimbres Health Fair organization, as well as the WNMU School of Nursing Student Nurse Association and community health care providers, featured a number of tables offered information on medical services, as well as eye screenings, and the potential to receive flu shots.

NM 90 northbound and southbound lanes at milepost 26(White Signal) are closed due to a motor vehicle crash. Motorists are asked to reduce speed, obey posted signs, and watch for emergency personnel, and equipment. Please expect delays.

The article continues the Grant County Commission special meeting on Sept. 26, 2023. The second presentation at the meeting came from WNM Communications representatives to answer questions from commissioners on the projects WNMC plans to expand broadband service to Fierro and Pinos Altos.
WNM Communications General Manager Daniel Meszler and Director of Operations Wayne Baxter represented the company.
Breaking News: Gila Regional Medical Center appoints new CEO

The Gila Regional Medical Center (GRMC) Board of Trustees announced the appointment of Robert Whitaker as Chief Executive Officer effective October 30, 2023. Robert has more than 20 years of healthcare experience, primarily in critical access hospitals. Robert holds a Master of Public Health degree from Yale University, as well as a Master of Business Administration and Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering from the University of Houston. Robert and his family will move from Gallup, NM where he most recently served as the CEO of Rehoboth McKinley Christian Health Care Services. He also serves as the incoming president of the New Mexico Rural Hospital Network.
"We are delighted that Robert will be joining the GRMC team as the CEO as we continue a new chapter of leadership at the hospital," said Board Chairman Dr. Fred Fox, in a written statement as he was unavailable for the meeting.
Smoke reported not a concern

The Silver City Fire Department Fire Investigator, Eloy Vasquez, told the Beat the smoke seen on the eastern part of town, Thursday, Oct. 5, about 3:30 p.m., was from a small, controlled burn that was in full compliance with town regulations.
