Silver Schools recognizes community partnerships

The Silver City Consolidated Schools held a work session on August 21, 2023. President Ashley Montenegro called the meeting to order. Other board members in attendance Michelle Diaz, Patrick Cohn, Mike McMillan, and Eddie Flores. Superintendent William Hawkins also attended. The Pledge of Allegiance and salute to the New Mexico flag took place.
The board approved the agenda.
The purpose of this work session had to do with the history adoption and scope sequence and assessment. Cindy Barris, associate superintendent, gave the board an update on the current status. Barris had gotten a committee together to go over all the curricula chosen for each grade k-12. Some of the materials had not come in yet but they knew what had been chosen. The history curriculum for fourth grade did not include any New Mexico history. They reached out locally to the museum for a way to supplement that area. Barris said the museum has some great resources and said they would be happy to help.
Heavy batteries stolen from equipment

A Santa Clara Police Department officer responded Thursday, Aug. 24, 2023, at about 7:10 a.m., to Bellm Street and Lariat Road in reference to a vehicle burglary call. According to an XCPD incident report, a representative of Southwest Concrete and Paving stated batteries had been taken from a backhoe and a motor grader while parked at the construction site. The batteries were last seen when the equipment was parked around 5:30 p.m. the previous day.
The officer stated it appeared someone had unbolted the batteries and carried them away. A spot in the site fence was observed that was not secured. Whoever took the batteries, the officer said, was able to walk through the fence and "walk out with the batteries easily."

At the Grant County Commission work session on Aug. 8, 2023, County Manager Charlene Webb continued with the regular meeting agenda review. The first item of new business addressed the consideration of an ARPA (American Rescue Plan Act) allocation in the amount of $1 million for broadband wireless improvements to Fierro and Pinos Altos.
District 4 Commissioner Billy Billings said he would like to table the issue until the September meeting in order to address some questions.
District 5 Commissioner Harry Browne said he, too, had the same questions as Commissioner Billings.
UPDATE: Grant County Sheriff's Office seeks public help in locating homicide suspect

Jaime Rodriguez potentially armed and dangerous homicide suspect
The Grant County Sheriff's Office is investigating a homicide that occurred Sunday August 27, 2023.
On August 27, 2023 at approximately 8:37pm deputies with the Grant County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to the area of Pinon and Hutchinson in Santa Clara in regards to shots fired.
On arrival deputies had contact with a male subject who had been shot. The suspect who is identified as Jaime Rodriguez dob 11-19-1996 then fled the scene in a newer model Yellow and Black Jeep Wrangler unknown license plate. Jaime is described as 5'5" 130lbs with brown hair and brown eyes.

The first elected official to speak at the regular meeting of the Grant County Commission on Aug. 10, 2023 was Treasurer Patrick Cohn.
He presented the tax schedule maintenance report as of July 31, 2023. Taxes collected to date for fiscal year 2022 total $12.414,482.85, with $875,469.23 remaining uncollected.
Cobre starts the year with new curriculum

The Cobre Consolidated Schools held a board meeting at on August 14, 2023. Chair Serena Murillo called the meeting to order. Other board members in attendance included Gabriella Begay, Gilbert Guadiana, David Terrazas and Elizabeth Dean (by phone). Acting superintendent Michael Koury also attended.
Reading of the board norms took place with each board member reading a norm. The norms consist of five rules the board strives to adhere to during the meeting. They are listed as actively listen to all perspectives, respond to concerns and questions as a unified board, professionalism expected, assume positive intent, and be positive and responsive.
The Pledge of Allegiance and salute to the New Mexico flag took place.
Public input on agenda items none currently.
Action items
The board approved the agenda with one change to move the student representative report to after the approval of the agenda.
Gila National Forest firefighters recognized

Silver City Ranger District firefighters leading the agency
SILVER CITY, NM, August 24, 2023 – The Gila National Forest has long been recognized as leading in fire management. This year, two separate agencies recognized members of the Silver City Ranger District's fire organization as outstanding in their field in their latest annual awards.
"These employees exhibit leadership, duty, respect, integrity, and community service every day they come to work. It is gratifying to have their contributions recognized by others outside of the Forest Service," said Silver City District Ranger Elizabeth Toney. "I could not be prouder of their skills, professionalism, and dedication to duty."
Gila National Forest prepares for autumn prescribed fires

Silver City Ranger District preparing for Jaybird, Mill, and Pinos Altos WUI projects
SILVER CITY, NM, August 25, 2023 – The Gila National Forest, Silver City Ranger District is assessing conditions in preparation for implementing the Jaybird, Mill, and Pinos Altos Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) prescribed fire projects.
The 2,600-acre Jaybird prescribed fire project is in the Signal Peak area, near Meadow Creek and Jaybird Canyon. The unit is adjacent to the east side of New Mexico Highway 15 from Meadow Creek Road to milepost 19. The project aims to lower future fire intensity, protect wildlife habitat, and reduce hazardous fuel loads in the area. Temporary road and area closures can be expected on Forest Road 149 (Meadow Creek Road) and NM Highway 15.
