Audubon Program about Water

(Silver City, NM, August 3, 2014) Water issues seem to be in the news all the time. Want to know what's up with water in our region?

Learn more at a presentation titled "Conservation Conversations" August 9 at 10 AM at the Mimbres Valley Learning Center. Members of the local Southwestern New Mexico Audubon Society will be on hand to discuss local water issues. Lisa Fields is the co-chair of the conservation committee and writes impact articles about field research projects for Cornell University's Nutrient Management Spear Program. She recently retired from a 21-year career in Agriculture, working in agronomy and farm business management in the Extension system and as an independent consultant. Terry Timme is the treasurer and works in the Silver City Office of Sustainability as a planner for conservation issues in energy, water and recycling.

The program is designed to discuss our water resources here in Southwestern New Mexico and listen to your concerns about water issues. There will be some basic background information about water resource terminology, local water use patterns, and factors influencing future water needs. Local examples of water conservation practices that apply to households, farms and municipalities will also be presented. Financial benefits of water conservation, the value of the Gila River and its meaning to the audience will be discussed along with citizens' role in municipal/regional water conservation planning.

This free interactive educational program, Saturday, August 9, at WNMU Deming, room 152 in the Mimbres Valley Learning Center will begin at 10:00 AM. Please enter the building at 2300 East Pine through the east door. Light refreshments will be served.
