For the 3rd consecutive Fall, an Alaskan cyclist will be embarking on a long bike ride to promote student volunteerism and community leadership. Beau Bassett, a 64 year old youth development specialist, will begin his 2014 Points of Light Bike Ride in Silver City, New Mexico on September 11, 2014, a national day of service and remembrance, and end in South Bend, Indiana on Saturday, October 25, 2014, National Make A Difference Day.

He will bike for 45 days and cover close to 1,700 miles visiting schools and community youth organizations along the way in New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, Missouri, Indiana and Illinois. This is a self-contained ride, and he will be carrying all his gear and camping out along the route. His two previous long rides from Mount Vernon, Washington to Santa Cruz, California (Fall 2012) and from Santa Cruz to Silver City (Fall 2013) involved stopping at schools and advocating for students volunteer service and recognition.

Bassett will arrive in Silver City on September 6 and prepare for the Ride and do community outreach for student volunteerism and leadership for several days until Thursday, September 11. He will be reaching out to youth serving programs and schools and recognizing excellent Silver City based youth volunteer service activities at the Aldo Leopold High School, 4-H Council of Grant County, Volunteer Center of Grant County, and the Grant County Youth Volunteer Corps. Bassett will also appear before the Silver City Town Council on September 9th at its regular meeting.
