SILVER CITY, N.M., Jan. 13, 2015 - Gila National Forest fire crews are preparing to conduct pile burning on the Silver City Ranger District in the Meadow Creek area approximately 10 miles north of Silver City, N.M. Ignitions may begin Tuesday, Jan. 20 and continue throughout the winter as conditions permit.

Smoke will be noticeable around the project during days of ignitions, may linger at night and early morning, but decrease during the daytime. This area will be signed and posted for public safety. The objectives of these burns is to reduce wildfire threat by removing fuels created from past and ongoing thinning projects and return important nutrients to the soil.
