SILVER CITY, N.M., Jan. 14, 2015 - Due to widespread interest, the Gila National Forest will offer an additional Introductory Session for the 2015 Gila Southwest Firefighter (SWFF) recruitment program. To be accepted into the program, candidates must meet all of the attendance requirements, successfully complete a 40-hour training course and pass a Work Capacity Test.

This is the final opportunity for interested individuals to participate in the 2015 SWFF recruitment program. To qualify, candidates must meet the following requirements:

· Attend the Introductory Session on Wednesday, Jan. 21 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Grant County Conference Center, 1400 Highway 180, Silver City, N.M.
· Attend all of the 40-hour class Feb. 23 - 27, 2015 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Grant County Conference Center

· Pass the Work Capacity Test
The Work Capacity Test involves walking three miles with a 45-pound pack in 46 minutes. Good physical fitness is a critical factor in passing this test and it is advised that individuals begin a fitness regimen immediately to prepare for the arduous fitness test. A Work Capacity Test will be administered at Fox Field, Feb. 14 and again Feb. 21, at 9:00 a.m. for all SWFF candidates. Health Screening Questionnaires must be completed and returned no later than Jan. 21, 2015 to participate in the Work Capacity Test.

The SWFF program has a long and distinguished history in the southwest. SWFF crews were called to duty for seven fire tours during the 2014 fire season. Individuals from SWFF also filled temporary positions on engines and suppression crews for local ranger districts. Strong work ethics and pride in a job well done keep SWFF crews in use each fire season. Crew members can expect to be called to duty frequently.

Participants must bring the following documents to the Introductory meeting to be accepted into the training program: two forms of personal identification, one of which must have a picture. Personal identification can be current state issued driver's license, current passport, or social security card. Additionally, candidates must bring their bank account routing information for direct deposit purposes. Direct deposit routing numbers can be found at the bottom of a check or on a bank statement.

Application packets are available at the Gila National Forest Supervisor's Office in Silver City from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. It is strongly advised to have applications completed prior to the Introductory Session. Background checks and drug testing may be applied.
