Silver City, NM (May 24, 2016) - When mental illnesses or disorders are talked about, the language typically used to describe them tends to be clinical and impersonal. These words, while useful for doctors or clinicians, often don't do justice to what life with a mental illness feels like.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month and the intent is to raise awareness about mental health conditions while highlighting the importance of good mental health for everyone. Speaking out about what mental illness feels like can encourage others to recognize symptoms early on in the disease process, and empower individuals to be agents in their own recovery. "HMS understands the importance of comprehensive, integrated and holistic care, and we are committed to providing quality mental health care for southwest New Mexico," stated Dan Otero, HMS CEO.

"Mental illnesses are common and treatable, and help is available. In cases of mental illness, medical assistance should be sought so that people do not feel isolated and alone," said Dr. Neal Bowen, HMS Chief Mental Health Officer. "Sharing is the key to breaking down the stigma surrounding mental illnesses and to showing others that they are not alone in their feelings and their symptoms," added Bowen.

Please call HMS' Mental Health Services office phone # at (575) 597-2454 for more information. The NM "Peer to Peer Warm Line" is a peer counseling resource that is available between 3:30pm and 11:30pm (MT) at (855) 466-7100.
