The Silver City Public Library will be hosting events for National Novel Writing Month to support aspiring novelists, in collaboration with the Southwest Festival of the Written Word. There will be an orientation on Tuesday, October 25, 5:00-5:45pm. The kickoff event and first write-in will be Tuesday, November 1, 4:00-5:45pm, and there will be another write-in on Tuesday, November 15, 4:00-5:45pm. All the events are free, open to the public, and located at the public library at 515 W. College Avenue on the corner of College and Cooper Street.

During National Novel Writing Month, also known as NaNoWriMo, writers worldwide challenge themselves to complete a 50,000-word first-draft novel. Participants can register, get support, and learn more on the organization's website, nanowrimo.org. Youth age 17 and under can register with the NaNoWriMo Young Writers Program at ywp.nanowrimo.org and set their own challenge. Guidance on how to get started will be offered at the October 25 orientation session at the library.

In November 2015, 431,626 writers took on the NaNoWriMo challenge, including 80,137 students and educators in the Young Writers Program.

Writers ranging in age from high school through adulthood are invited to attend the NaNoWriMo events at the library. The November 1 kickoff event will include a prize giveaway. At the November 1 and 15 write-ins, participants can work on their drafts while sharing ideas and moral support. Simple refreshments will be provided, and participants are welcome to bring a snack to share. Budding novelists will also have access to the library's open wi-fi network.

The Southwest Festival of the Written Word is co-sponsoring the NaNoWriMo events. "As the librarian in charge of community outreach, I collaborate with the Festival steering committee to support reading and writing year-round," said Lillian Galloway, programming and outreach librarian. "To this end, we organize many literary events besides the large biennial Festivals."
