GNPS Feb2 smCome to the meeting of the Gila Native Plant Society on Friday, February 17, 2017, at 7:00 p.m. in Harlan Hall, and hear Kathy Whiteman, Director of the WNMU Outdoor Program, present a topic with the intriguing title "We Need a Bigger Boat". Kathy will discuss the state of environmental literacy among college students, opportunities for learning and potential impacts on sustainability. She will then explore how those of us who are "members of the choir" can expand the conversation to promote conservation. A portion of the talk will encourage dialogue among attendees. And she will no doubt explain the meaning of the mysterious title.

Kathleen Whiteman, Ph.D., teaches in the Natural Science Department at Western New Mexico University and is the Director of the WNMU Outdoor Program, which operates under a Special Use Permit with the USDA Forest Service in the Gila National Forest. To learn more about the Program, check out the University website at http://outdoor.wnmu.edu.

In addition, we will have another chance to hear students Chala Werber and Nathan Martin tell us about their work at the WNMU greenhouse, a treat we missed in January owing to snow.

Meetings of the Gila Native Plant Society are held the third Friday of the month at 7.00 p.m. in Harlan Hall, second floor, on the Western New Mexico University campus. Free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served following the program.

The Gila Native Plant Society is committed to promoting education, research and appreciation of the native flora of the Southwest, encouraging the preservation of rare and endangered plant species and supporting the use of suitable native plants in landscaping.
