Farzana Curmally was born and grew up in Bombay (now known as Mumbai), India. She lived and worked in Mumbai most of her life. In 2004 she met her husband, and the two traveled extensively for two years and lived in Australia and New Zealand for several months. In 2006 they moved to Paris and continue to reside there part time. For the last 7 years they have been spending the winters in Silver City, enjoying the glorious sunshine that Paris so lacks in the winters.

After doing her B.A. in French at Bombay University, Farzana went to Paris to study French in more depth at the Sorbonne. She lived with a French family who had two small children and she had to speak French all the time. In Paris, she was exposed to a fascinating new language, culture and fantastic food and wine.

She returned to Mumbai after a year long stay in Paris and joined Air France, and mastered the French language while working there for 23 years. Telephone sales, direct sales, communication with travel agencies, and French companies enabled her to develop an expertise in French.

Farzana states, "During these years in Silver City, due to a lack of Indian restaurants, and my Indian genes kicking in, I started really aching for Indian food. So I basically taught myself. Of course I had a background. Very soon after arriving here, I met Rob, who was the owner and chef of a great restaurant in this town called the Curious Kumquat. He always wanted to try new cuisines and was keen to involve me in an Indian cooking class he wanted to give. So I supplied him with some recipes and intended to be his sous chef. However, on the morning of the class, to my horror, he announced to me that I would be conducting the class. Well I had done some teaching at Air France and had liked it, so I thought "What the heck". And since then I have been giving Indian cooking classes. And I love it."

The Silver City Food Co-op is excited to collaborate with Farzana and offer these classes. If you enjoy Indian food, then these are the classes to take
