The Silver City Public Library is hosting two workshops for children and teens facilitated by Santa Fe Opera teaching artist Charles Gamble during their summer reading program. On Wednesday, June 14, 2:00-4:00pm, Gamble will lead children to create and stage an original story following the Hero's Journey, a pattern that many myths, folktales, and even movies follow. The hero leaves home on a quest for something that is missing, meeting new friends and encountering dramatic obstacles and fierce adversaries on the way. Before returning home, the hero is dramatically transformed. Families can help plan the story that kids bring to life in a whirlwind world premiere.

On Thursday, June 15, 2:00-4:00pm, Gamble will offer a workshop on theatrical improvisation for teens. High-end listening is a skill needed for telling a story collaboratively. The workshop will focus on techniques from theatrical improvisation and movement and nurture students' innate curiosity, creativity, and ability to make connections with others. No previous acting experience is necessary in this fun and supportive session. Attendees are asked to wear clothes that are comfortable to move in.

The June 14 workshop will be for ages 6-12, and there will be a limit of 20 participants. The June 15 workshop will be for ages 12 and up, and there will be a limit of 15 participants. There will be no pre-registration for the workshops; instead, free tickets will be given out starting 30 minutes prior to the beginning of each event.

Summer Reading Program activities for all ages are scheduled from June 6 through July 21. Registration to track reading and redeem prizes is open; family members of all ages can register through the duration of the program. Those interested in signing up can do so by visiting the library front desk, bringing their library card if they have one. There are summer reading activities and prize drawings for adults, too.

The library is located at 515 W. College Avenue in Silver City and is open Monday through Thursday 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM, Friday 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM, and Saturday 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM. For more information visit silvercitypubliclibrary.org or contact the library at 575-538-3672 or ref@silvercitymail.com.
