Silver City, NM, March 22, 2018—For Immediate Release. The Gila National Forest invites you to have a safe and responsible OHV experience on your public lands. The Gila NF has implemented Travel Management across the entire forest. There are an estimated 3,334 miles of road open to OHV riders on the Gila NF. Acting Forest Supervisor Deb Bumpus recommends that all OHV riders follow the New Mexico Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. Bumpus states "We invite all visitors coming to the Gila to have a responsible and safe experience while visiting."

New Mexico has requirements for off-highway motor vehicles (OHVs) designed to protect the safety of all OHV users and ensure responsible and sensitive OHV use. The law requires all OHV users to register their OHVs if used on public land. New Mexico residents must purchase OHV registration decals from the Motor Vehicle Division (MVD). Non-residents can purchase OHV registration decals from the Department of Game and Fish Online Sales website (https://onlinesales.wildlife.state.nm.us/.)

In addition, some of the requirements that the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish (http://www.wildlife.state.nm.us/ohv/ohv-laws-and-rules/) requires of all riders under 18 are:

NMDG&F states "If you intend to operate an ATV or ROV on a paved road, it is your responsibility to inquire with the local authority to which you wish to ride to see if such use is allowed in that specific area."
