District 2 Town Councilor Lynda Aiman-Smith Invites Volunteers to Help this Saturday

Silver City -- Town Councilor Lynda Aiman-Smith invites residents to join her from 10 am to 2 pm this Saturday, July 13, at the historic Water Works building on Little Walnut Road to create a "parklet" for local residents. This event is part of the annual Territorial Charter Days celebration which commemorates the incorporation of The Town of Silver City in 1878.

The idea to create a small park behind the Water Works Building came from local residents, said Aiman-Smith, who invites neighbors to join one another to plant native plants, install pathways and benches, and create a seven-circuit labyrinth, which is a meditative walking space.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for town residents to volunteer, get to know one another and create a new public space that everyone can enjoy," said Aiman-Smith. "The Water Works Building is such a wonderful place, and one that we hope one day will be a stopping point for hikers and cyclists coming through town. "I hope that District 2 residents especially will come out, bring their friends and enjoy a few hours of volunteering to help beautify Silver City."

Each year each of the four town councilors create a volunteer day for the purpose of beautifying or improving the community, the idea of which came from the town charter which states that any male 18 years or older may be required to work on behalf of the town, explained James Marshall, assistant town manager.

"The idea is to build community through volunteer efforts and projects that improve the neighborhoods where we live, work and play," he said. "Whenever people come together, it makes our community stronger. These events also create an opportunity for residents to get to know police officers and firefighters, the folks who are working hard to protect us all."

Last year, Aiman-Smith hosted a "play street" event in her district, closing off North Georgia Street between Highway 180 and 13th Street to cars. Volunteers, families with children and neighbors came together to socialize, play games, create art and enjoy music in a safe, familiar public space.
