Quemado, NM, August 13, 2019—The Quemado Ranger District has a public slash disposal site known as the Baca Pit. The Baca Pit was recently burned by the Quemado RD’s firefighter crews, and is now reopened for public use. This site is for vegetative materials only. Please do not dispose of building materials, treated wood, carpet or other types of garbage in the pit. Catron and Grant County residents can dump vegetative materials free of charge.

As long as the district is burning vegetative materials, they remain in compliance with the New Mexico Air Quality regulations. There are frequently large piles of trash dumped at the site. When there is trash at the site the firefighters must sort through the trash and remove the non-vegetative materials prior to burning. Emily Irwin, Quemado District Ranger stated, “it can be a health and safety hazard to have our firefighters sorting through garbage.”

If you live in Catron County and wish to dispose of trash you may take it to the Catron County Solid Waste Convenience Center. Their locations and schedules can be found at http://catroncounty.us/custom.html?id=16554. If you live in Grant County and wish to dispose of trash you may take it to the Grant County Solid Waste Landfills. Their locations and schedules can be found at http://www.grantcountynm.com/grant_county_nm_info.php?CID=388.
