New Mexico Environment Department Program Recognizes _Businesses For Pollution Prevention Achievements

Santa Fe, NM - The New Mexico Environment Department Program (NMED) is pleased to announce our 2012 selections for the Green Zia Environmental Leadership Program (GZELP). The following organizations have shown commitment to and innovation for reducing waste and natural resource use in New Mexico:

     Gold Level Leader Raytheon Diné Facility; Farmington, NM
     Silver Level Leader Dapwood Furniture Company; Albuquerque, NM
     Silver Level Leader Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP); Carlsbad, NM
     Bronze Level Leader Adelante Development Center; Albuquerque, NM
     Bronze Level Leader HB Construction, Inc.; Albuquerque, NM
     Bronze Level Leader Lovelace Health Plan; Albuquerque, NM
     Bronze Level Leader Montoya's Painting, LLC; Albuquerque, NM

“This year's Green Zia participants are not only conserving natural resources, they are also reducing costs and helping to protect our environment. We appreciate their commitment and their leadership and we look forward to their continued participation in the Green Zia program.” says NMED Deputy Secretary, Butch Tongate.

Since its inception in 1999, over 130 organizations and businesses have participated in the program with over $45 million in cost savings reported. In 2011 participants reported reductions of 10,000 pounds of hazardous waste; 338,000 pounds of solid waste; 24,488 gallons of water; 267,888 kilowatt hours of electricity; and 972 MMBtu, resulting in $355,000 of cost savings.

GZELP is a voluntary program for any type of small to large size organization implementing sustainable practices. Applicants must demonstrate certain environmental achievements and set goals to be achieved during membership tenure.
