Silver City, NM – Western New Mexico University is set to host the 2013 Battle of the Books competition on Saturday, April 27.

The annual competition brings together hundreds of elementary and middle school students for a friendly competition of book knowledge and trivia.

"We are excited to welcome students from across the state for the upcoming Battle," stated Abe Villarreal, WNMU Director of Communications. "This year's event will have a few new twists to it to help make it as memorable as possible for the participants."

Now is the time for educators, librarians, or home school facilitators to register schools or libraries. Participants compete at two levels, fourth and fifth grade elementary students and a middle school level.

A list of 20 books is available for each team to read, and while only 10 books are required to be read by competition day, many students choose to read more titles.

"Each year, students are excited to see the titles selected for the competition," said Villarreal. "This year's titles include The Dreamer by Pam Munoz Ryan, Hatchet by Gary Paulsen and Wrinkle In Time by Madeleine L'Engle."

Interested schools can register teams at http://www.newmexicobookbattle.com. The website provides complete book lists, lodging information and the Battle Rules.
