During the month of January six stunning pieces by Mary Frances Dondelinger are on display at the Silver City Public Library, 515 W. College Avenue, Silver City.  Everyone is invited to the library to see her paintings of endangered species of the southwest.  Join us on Thursday, January 24 at 5:30pm for a free all-ages event focusing on Mary Frances’ recent book, Modern Icons: the Sacrifice of Endangered Species of the American Southwest.  Children and youth will have an opportunity to create their own art, and adults are invited to enjoy Mary Frances’ lecture and slide presentation about her art and the book.

Modern Icons features Mary Frances’ detailed paintings of southwestern endangered species, along with explanations of each plant or animal, its habitat, and reasons for its endangered status.

Mary Frances learned egg tempura iconography techniques during an apprenticeship to an orthodox iconographer in Italy.  She uses these methods along with valuable materials like gold leaf to portray the endangered species.  Her canvases are paper plates-representing our throwaway culture.  Modern Icons is sponsored by ARTSPIRE (a program of the New York Foundation for the Arts), Gallery One, the Margaret W. Reed Foundation, individual sponsors.
