Fire crews plan to ignite Pine Cienega slash piles off of Brushy Mountain Road (Grant County Road 5-12), approximately 23 miles southwest of Glenwood, New Mexico beginning Monday, January 8, if appropriate weather and fuels conditions allow.
The project includes about 300 acres of slash piles that are the result of thinning hazardous fuels in February 2023. Burning the slash piles will further reduce hazardous fuels in the vicinity of the Pine Cienega Ranch Community, reducing wildfire risk to dozens of homes and properties in the area.

Partnership with Gila National Forest supports recreational aviation infrastructure.
SILVER CITY, NM, January 2, 2024 – Visitors who frequent the Rain Creek Trail off of Sacaton Road (Grant County Road 2-1) may have noticed a few changes at the old Sacaton Airstrip last year, including reestablishment of the runway and installation of a new vault toilet. Located adjacent to Rain Creek Trailhead and just outside of the Gila Wilderness boundary, the Sacaton Airstrip had been abandoned for more than four decades due to changes in management needs and agency funding. Thanks to a partnership between the Gila National Forest and the Recreational Aviation Foundation (RAF), Sacaton Airstrip officially reopened in January 2023.
